I've heard of this a while ago. I don't know of the director, and I don't know if I'm supposed to have. Movies from a great game series like that COULD be done well in theory, but I'm sure it will indeed end up terrible. The idea is always great, and then it goes downhill all the way. |

Sorry what? What's exactly so bad about this now?
I haven't seen anything yet to indicate that Silent Hill will suck; in fact they seem to be talking a lot about how the script writers and director are huge fans of the games and therefore not prone to ripping it apart from the inside. Hopefully this movie will therefore prove to be something more extensive and intricate than, say, Resident Evil.
I'm looking for an atmosphere akin to that of 28 Days Later, I guess. If they meet that then I'll be happy enough. |

I heard about this like a long time ago but thought they gave up on the idea or something because I never heard of it again... oh well I wont expect much over it because I really cant think of a movie based off a video game that I like (besides spirits within but thats sort of a different story, I'd have liked it better if it had nothing to do with final fantasy, which it didnt beside the title... anyway not getting on that topic) and then if it turns out to be good then cool, if it turns out to be bad then i was expecting it to so I wont be dissappointed.

I've been following the project for awhile now. As Long as Akira Yamaoka does the music, it'll kick ass :) |

yay! lets bitch about shit we have no clue about!
come on steve, youre a smarter guy than that |

It's got nothing to do with how much we know about the project. Past incarnations of such films have shown the industry is still unable to merge the two narrative genres well. In fact most people constantly complain about various movies like Resident Evil and FF: TSW. This title may indeed be the turning point, although I think it will take longer to make this work properly.
You'll have to excuse my ranting, my screen narrative subject at uni is poisoning my brain with crazy thoughts. It could be a great film, I remain sceptical. |

I dont think he was doing that, he just said 'bad idea' not OMFG THIS IS GONNA SUCK ASS!! my opnion is, its not a bad or good idea, just a typical hollywood quick money not much thought put into the story idea... but I could be proven wrong, we all could, either way we all have our perceptions on whats to come... |

I'll admit, I was looking forward to this film when I heard it would remain faithful to the game. It would have been interesting to see how it would play out with the rumor of Boreanaz as Harry. Now they've gone and changed the story, and I'm not so sure I'm going to like what I see. Don't bombard me with your "it's stupid to have premature opinions about something we barely know about", because that really irritates me. I'm sorry I'm degrading my own intelligence for having something so simple as a predisposed opinion, and therefor, not living up to the patented Xavier-Garcia-Life-Codeā¢ by settling in the middle. I mean, those starving African youths will never get the chance to see the film, so I should stop bitching and be happy, right? <_<
EDIT: It has come to my attention, through my own will, that I may be over-reacting about this. I'll leave my message up, but I'll remind myself to just ignore it. It will only help at the end of the day.
And in response to you (Rahul), since when does being a major fan of a franchise and a writer all the same propose that said writers aren't prone to tearing it apart? Does fan fiction ring a bell? Professional or just kids, people are prone to making a bad output with good intent. |

Because I'd like to believe that the chances of a dedicated and informed person writing a successful or qualitatively high script for Silent Hill are higher than, say, how they handled Resident Evil (which story-wise wasn't even too bad) or FF:TSW.
The problems with the abovementioned lie herein:
- Resident Evil: trying to make a storyline for the movie that somehow ties into the games, but not quite
- FF:TSW: assigning some action movie scriptwriter/scenario producer who decides that although the metaphorical blathering of Sakaguchi is "intereting", there really should be more guns in this
As such, Silent Hill is taking a concept (of Silent Hill) and crafting an original storyline that neither attempts to reproduce the exact events of a game on the screen (impossible), nor does it Hollywood it up by adding unnecessary and totally out of place events/scenarios to the plot.
That gives me faith to some extent that this project will be of higher quality than those we've seen so far. Especially considering that Yamaoka is all over this, from production to sound/music design.
I'm just not willing to make any conclusions about this project yet. So far I hope it will be good, judging by what I've heard of it. |

well steve, if you have a problem by the way I react then make sure that you dont come off the way you did in your first post! Had you explained the actual problem the way you did on your second post, then Id have no issues. What I dont like is when I get the impression soembody bitches and moans for no apparent reason
so yeah, and all |

Well, I think Silent Hill isn't going to suck (not that anybody cares about my opinion) but I also don't think it's going to be very good either. The movie I'm waiting for is Batman Begins, personally.
OH and Godzilla: Final Wars. I know I'm like, close to the only Godzilla fan left on the face of the Earth but I still think the big G's going out with a kickass helluva big bang. |

Speaking of Centralia...I want to go there. God knows why... I hear the coal fires are still burning there.
In any case...I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK ABOUT THIS MOVIE ANYMORE. :(
So I won't and I'll wait until it comes out. Sorry for all the anger! :B |

Wait, Centralia ILLINOIS? I was just there today, the place is a shithole, and not the neat kind...but they have a mental asylum if it's any consolation. |

I don't know, but just the fact that we don't have Uwe Boll as the director of this 'Silent Hill' movie-to-be makes me relieved.
But, yeah, hopefully it will be good and all. Rahul's mentioning of a '28 days later' atmosphere sounds like a good idea they could use... |

As shooting begins on the movie version of Silent Hill, Hollywood rag Variety has revealed more details of the cast list.
The film will star Radha Mitchell - whose previous credits include Pitch Black and two episodes of Neighbours - as Rose, a woman trying to find out the truth behind her daughter's mysterious disappearance. Sean "Boromir" Bean [surely Sean "Sharpe" Bean? -Ed] will play her husband.
Other cast members include Deborah Kara Unger (Crash, The Game) and Kim Coates (Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbour). The movie is helmed by Christopher Gans, director of cult French horror Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Roger Avary - director of Killing Zoe and The Rules of Attraction and co-writer of Pulp Fiction, for which he won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar with Quention Tarantino - has done the script.
According to Ain't It Cool News, Avary and Gans are promising to stay true to the original game, with the emphasis on atmospheric tension rather than Resi Evil-style gun-running.
The film is being shot in a spooky little Canadian town that they reckon is about as close as you can get to the real, or rather the virtual, thing - judge for yourself by checking out some location shots here. Silent Hill is due for release next year.
Sean Bean sounds like an excellent choice for a James/Harry-esque character, and having the guy who co-wrote Pulp Fiction certainly can't be a bad thing. Check out the pics linked in the quote; if that doesn't look like Silent Hill then I don't know what does. My hopes are up for this movie, in any case. |

Neat images. Things seem to be shaping up quite well for this one... I have good expectations as well. |

I will remain on the fence about this movie, it may be good, it may be shit. The images I've just seen look the part, but I will wait until the film's release before making any real judgements. All I can say is that if they screw it up, I think someone should be punished. It shouldn't be hard to do a film about Silent Hill, especially if it's not based on a game specifically. (Cybil the policewoman though?)
Should be interesting to see how the film works out. |

*DERAILS CONVERSATION*
Centralia, Pennsylvania.
It's a small town where (I believe, not really sure) there was a coal mine, and a fire started inside of it well over 40 years ago or so. It still burns, and the area is thick with smoke. It looks REALLY crazy. I would want to go there, but I wouldn't want to develop any sort of disease/disorder/etc. from the poor air quality.
Vivi - Shut up.
Nephtis and everyone else - I'll admit, once again, I over-reacted. I'll join you on that very same fence. |
