You know, a series that consistently seems to get overlooked by FF junkies is Castlevania...I mean, while true, they aren't quite as beefed up on story as most Square stuff, but they're loads of fun....the only downside is all the demonic imagery gets kind of depressing after a while....

I like the castlevania series, AND demonic imagery. (Though for the latter I go for MegaTen)

The Castlevania series is great. I've especially liked it since symphony of the night, since then it has been using a lot of RPG elements (though it used some before). I thought that Aria of Sorrow was one of the best in the series, and since the next one is supposed to be a continution of it I have my hopes pretty high.

Oh yeah I think that demonic imagery (when used well) can really do a lot for the atmosphere of the game, and I think that it's very appropriate for this series.

I don't mind the demonic imagery, i think it ads some style and flair to the environments. The Castlevania music has been pretty good at times. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon wasn't bad, I just hate looking at all the detail on the tiny GBA screen...Castlevania is one of the main reasons i bought a GBA player for my gamecube (so i could see everything) :)

I looved SotN. It was awesome. I haven't played any of the other ones though.
pixel
Castlevania is pretty good, mainly when it remains in 2D. The 3D games made so far weren't that good, I think...
pixel
Now see, I think Lament of Innocence was the best since Symphony....
pixel
i agree with thegloaming on this topic.... 2d is just the right way to go when playing castlevania if you ask me
pixel
Hey, now, I'll give that the N64 ones sucked ass, but Lament of Innocence was both a departure and a bit of an improvement on the series quickly stagnating engine. I mean, how many copies of LoI would Konami have sold if they kept to 2d. 2d in 3d graphics just doesn't look good, and while SotN was great for its time, how many people would want to shell out $50 for another version of it now?
pixel
I'm not so sure that I will play to much of castlevania. I haven't been impressed too much with it. I guess its just not my type of game!! LOL

Castlevania is one of those things, just like ff, that is like certain types of music...

Take Rolling Stones for example...most people see them as a good enough band. But with certain people their music just clicks, you know, and for those people, the Stones are the greatest rock band in the entire world. It's like a very limited religious conversion in the way it all makes sense suddenly.

So you can't help it if you haven't been enlightened yet, Shadow.

Personally, i think the Castlevania for N64 was fun. If all the other ones are so much better, then i can't wait to buy them. I have read articles about Lament of Innocence, it seems like a awesome game. In a way, Castlevania is an "acquired taste"
pixel
I still happen to think that the 2D games are better than the 3D games so far... but while the N64 games rather sucked, 'Lament of innocence' was a solid step towards the right direction. When I stated my opinion before, I didn't mean to say all 3D Castlevania games suck and are worthless. I just wanted to say that they still have some way to go before reaching the level of the 2D games. But that's my opinion only.

By the way, even if they suck, the N64 games can be rather fun sometimes... but 'Lament of innocence' is so much better it's even unfair to compare them all.

Go ahead and play whatever games you haven't, Vincent. It's really worth it, mostly.

Sorry if I didn't make my point clear before. :)

does anybody know a exact date for when castlevania is coming out for ds? or final fantasy 3, anyone know?
pixel
Konami hasn't released an actual release date for Castlevania DS: Cross of the Blue Moon (Working Title) but here is some awesome info and screenshots.

2 months until Castlevania: Curse of Darkness comes out! Who's excited! :D :D :D :D :D
The game (supposedly) takes place at roughly the same time as Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, when the plague brought about by Dracula's (un)timely demise was threatening all of Europe. You play as a demon who fell out of favor with Dracula and betrayed him. You've got a mortal love interest who has been captured by one of Dracula's lieutenants, and you get to blow stuff up. Lots of stuff.

The castlevania series rocks, castlevania on the NES was so fun albeit being damn hard, stupid bloody Death boss

Yay I'm excited about curse of darkness! Hopefully they will finally get the 3d formula right for this one.
pixel
Curse of Darkness looks to be even better than Aria of Sorrow from what I've seen so far...maybe not quite as good as Symphony, but....
pixel
I actually did enjoy Lament of Innocence, the music was awesome, so I do have high hopes for Curse and I don't think anything is as good as Symphony. Well, looks like we have to wait a week to find out.
pixel
Actually, I'll probably be waiting even longer, because I hardly ever get games right when they come out anymore. Its much better on my wallet to just wait a few months and they go down in price $20-$30

Anybody playing Dawn of Sorrow? It's quite nice, at least on par with each of the other titles in the series since (and including) Symphony of the Night.
pixel
I liked Aria of Sorrow and Symphony of the Night. I dunno, never really liked fighting with a whip, but swords and stuff...yeah, I can do that.

And no, I don't have some sort of whip-phobia. Lemme 'lone.
pixel
Castlevania rules.

...still, the last one I played was Lament, I haven't touched Curse of Darkness yet, or Dawn of Sorrow for that matter. I'm not a real fan. I'm just a fan of like, two or three of them.
