I've recently started getting into collecting OST's. I've only picked up a few so far, but I figured that the venerable SHMFoD crew would have a few things to say about them that hadn't already been said, so what's your favorite OST (or OSV), who's your favorite composer, etc., etc.

on that note:

galbadia hotel has pretty much everything, and theyre still adding

Shh! He didn't say anything about where to find some.

I don't really have any favorites, but I like Vagrant Story and Hitoshi Sakimoto's baroque style, and now I'm talking out of my ass.

favorites are Chrono Cross and Xenosaga (1 and 2) are my favorites, Final Fantasy X is good as well as Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy X-2 (if you can stand the cheeseyness me, I personally love the cheeseyness) if I think of any more I'll let you know, those are the ones off the top of my head for right now.

My favourite composer at the moment has to be Yasunori Mitsuda, he rocks my world. Current favourite soundtrack has to be Katamari Fortissimo Damacy, its been almost year since I played the game and the tunes are still stuck in my head.

Mitsuda is awfully good...the only actual Mitsuda OST I've got right now is Chrono Cross, but I'll definitely get some more eventually...
Been really diggin' Hiroki Kikuta's Seiken Densetsu 3 OSV though...

Im gonna need to get some Kikuta, but definitely I rock the Xenogears and Chrono Cross OST's....Uematsu's the master, but Mitsuda rocks my face off.

Yea, Mitsuda's always good, and that CC OST is classic.

I also enjoy Hitoshi Sakimoto (try the BOF:Dragon Quarter OST) and Motoi Sakuraba--the man knows how to make them battle tracks (look around for the Star Ocean 2 or 3 OSTs)

If you like Mitsuda. Check out the OSTs for Shadow Hearts 1 and 2, and Shadow Hearts: Near Death Experience. He contributed to the soundtracks along with main composer Yoshitaka Hirota.

And if you find you like Hirota (His battle tracks are superb) give a listen to the Shadow Hearts: From the New World OST.

Motoi Sakuraba... Baten Kaitos and Star Ocean 3 have bitchin soundtracks

FFVI is probably my favorite soundtrack all time, though Uematsu's stuff in general seems to be pretty superb.

As far as contemporary games, I also really liked Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for it's guitar-heavy music. Actually, I Liked the music in most of the other games mentioned as well.

This thread is useless without mention of Square Enix's number one composer, Masashi Hamauzu. Get everything he's ever made, including the Unlimited Saga soundtrack, his work for Final Fantasy X, and the recent Mususahi Samurai Legend music. They're great.

The music from the Super Smash Brothers Melee OST is very good indeed; the composer is Hirokazu Ando.

That said, I'm also quite partial to Jeremy Soule's music. He composed for both Guild Wars and Dawn of War. Harry Gregson-Williams is also not a bad composer, but most of his stuff sounds too similar. It's like he plagarised his own music :P. Lacks originality?

I like very much Akira Yamaoka's music and his contributions to the Silent Hill franchise.

A lot of the OC Remixes are also rather good.

I'm listening to Hamauzu now....fucking awesome

Sakuraba is also one of my favorites. He does things with synth that really shouldn't be possible.

I wasn't a fan of Sakurba's work after SO3. It just didn't appeal to me, especially that horrendous 'Bitter Dance'.

I have to agree with Ash Mantle that Harry Gregson-Williams' stuff isn't that flash. His work on MGS2 was good but MGS3's soundtrack just seemed labored, boring and lacking substance.

ZUN on the otherhand is a complete and utter god. Not only does he make soundtracks of amazing quality, he also makes his games by himself and has turned the doujin shmup scene completely upside down. If you haven't heard his music and/or played his games, you haven't lived.

Bitter Dance is a timeless classic. How could it not be with such lines as:

'Work that body, work that body, make sure you don't hurt nobody."

Best. Battle Theme. Ever.

Don't mind Rachel, she has spurious tastes and likes Scooter.

You didn't specify games or otherwise...so...one of the greatest OSTs is the soundtrack to Donnie Darko. Its really good for serious discussions during late night car-rides...and thinking. Sets a creepy, but awesome mood.

I never mind Rachel, she scares the bejesus out of me.

And Donnie Darko... what a great movie as well.
pixel
Woo-hoo Donnie Darko!

In regards to Scooter, how can you disrespect a man who says 'Respect to the man in the ice cream van?' :)
staff
pixel
Well, I can respect him for the fact that he makes songs comprised entirely of those lyrics and then sells several thousand copies of his albums.

That doesn't negate the fact that Rachel has spurious tastes, though.

Einhander OST. Underrated.
vip

same thing with the game, really
pixel
That reminds me, I've got a review of that lying around somewhere...

Yeah Einhander, best side-scrolling shmup on the PS. Much better than Thunder Force V and G-Darius. OST was pretty good, nice techno stuff that worked well with the game but it wasn't very interesting. I wouldn't listen to it by itself.

The Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack: Roar of the Earth on the otherhand is absolutely lovely.

Their podcast is gold, yes.

The Final Fantasy III soundtrack remixed by Tsuyoshi Sekito was their 1000th release.
