Okay so this whole PSP vs DS shit is making less and less sense to me. Im reading this months OPM and I keep finding things like:
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
-comes out for ps2 and psp. ps2 is technically superior but the psp one is obviously cheaper AND it has an exclusive feature, you get to play as the cops! (If you have ever played NFS: Hot Pursuit 2, then you know how cool that was)
Marvel Nemesis
-again, itll come out on both systems. ps2 one has more graphical tits while the psp is cheaper aaaaaaannnnd it gets two extra characters! Doctor Doom and Captain America are added to the roster
etc
Then there are compilation games like the GTA: Liberty City Stories, Burnout Legends, Suikoden 1 and 2... If the PSP's competitor was the DS then I would expect better looking ports of Tactics Advance, a Megaman Battle Network game or some sort of pokemon themed game but instead Sony wants us to re-buy things that we could play in our ps2!
Hell, look at dvd's and umd's. Sony now wants to forget about the dvd format that it helped popularize and make teens and old fogeys that dont know shit about shit re-buy their movies on umd format. Its insane!
In sort, whenever Sony said that the DS wasnt their competition.. well now I believe them! Sony is competing against itself! By encouraging companies to add extra features to their ps2 ports (even when respective release dates are identical) they want you to forget about playing on their older, cheaper system and get on with the ne wportable one and make them more munnies. Shit, even if umd games are cheaper than dvd games, the difference in cost between a ps2 and a psp is big enough to sustaion that difference in price.. and then some
So yeah, am I crazy or does all this shit actually make sense to you? |

I think that the PSP's market is a little unique since since it is portable and can play both games and movies, etc, while the DS focuses purely on gameplay and has a rather unqiue feature for those games (the touch screen), which even furthers the difference between the two.
So yeah, they both are sort of doing their own thing. |

i've said it before, and i'll say it again.

Hmmm.... Sony competing against itself? It's a weird but interesting theory.
Sony may have all these super functions on the PSP and all.... but I've found myself more interested in the gameplay aspect of handhelds. That's why I've always chosen Nintendo as my gaming buddy when it comes to stuff like that. DS started weak... but the turnaround in the titles that they feature now is impressive! Pretty soon we'll have stuff like Final Fantasy 3-- and Crystal Chronicles on the system! That is cool beans. And... it's only the beginning.
The only thing I can say about the whole competition thing... perhaps Sony is just trying to find better ways to improve the entire handheld market by trying things that no one has ever tried before. Shit, and why blame them? They have the money. They can come up with the most crappiest crap, and Sony will probably still be the dominating of the three companies! Fans stay true to their systems. That's why Nintendo is on a much different wavelength in Japan than it is in the States. It's the fanbase, pop culture-- and a little touch of integrity that makes a system what it is. Maybe all this stuff that the PSP has to offer to us right now (which is a "decent" amount) is only the beginning of something really big.
That's the thing about systems. You can never really tell what they're capable of until they're put to the test. |

As far as games go, i'm enjoying my PSP...I keep busy with Liberty City Stories, Metal Gear Ac!d, and Megaman Maverick Hunter X...I'm eagerly awaiting Megaman Powered up, and Me and my katamari.
The internet function is great, because my cellphone is basically just an expensive watch with no internet connection, and I work next to a Panera Bread, so I get wireless interwebs when I want to look up gaming news and email.
The thing people aren't understanding about UMDs is that they aren't to watch constantly, they are for convenience. IF you are riding in a car for 12 hours for vacation, UMDs are quite handy. If someone is using the TV you want to watch, pop a UMD movie in and hangout in bed and watch a movie. The screen looks a lot better in person, because I know it seems small, but it looks REALLY good. As for battery issues: plug it in, and/or get a battery adapter for the car (I did, and I have yet to run out of juice during a gaming session)...
I think the PSP is great, all of your opinions be damned :) |

I love how Nintendo nerds cant stop the urge to sponsor the ds everytime a handheld topic is mentioned.
THIS DISCUSSION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CHOOSING A DS OVER A PSP |

In their love of proprietary Sony doesn't really make sense in the following areas also: Sony BMG CDs had lovely rootkits, Sony digital cameras require memory sticks (great, so one can't use either a CompactFlash or SD card used with a non-Sony camera?), and Sony DAPs 'just' (like 2004) finally started to support mp3 natively. I also really need to watch a bunch of throwaway movies like XXX and Fantastic Four on a PSP. What a selling point! It looks like Sony tried to make the PSP a jack of all trades but it looks like a master of none (guffaw cliche). A decent-sized micro hard drive is one thing that would make the PSP more versatile (ahem, for storing your own movies I guess) if you buy that crap that you need a portable device that can do it all. (How much would a HD jack up the price of a later PSP model?)
But hey, at least Me and My Katamari (speaking of which, I read the Gamespot preview which made this brilliant observation: "Though the game goes by the cuddlier title of Me and My Katamari in the States, the Japanese game's moniker is a bit of a mouthful: Boku no Watashi no Katamari Damacy." Link) is one example of a game that isn't a slightly tweaked version of its PS2 analogues/predecessors. |

fanboy opinions are always twisted..
ether way im getting both.. but so far im pretty happy with my DS |

I think it has been established that the PSP is competing with practically no one. That is why Sony can embark on stupid ad campaigns like the ones going through London at the moment (http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/men/news/s/206/206881_no_play_station_say_metro_bosses.html). The closest thing it can be considered to be competing in is the recent multi-use media device market. You know, mobile phones that can access the internet, play shitty games, take photos and listen to music; Ipods that can view photos and play movies; the new Microsoft Origami which is supposed to be a fully portable pc. Probably it is those things that are giving the PSP competition to the general, non-gaming public. Last edited by Quale on March 11, 2006 |
