The Game Developers' Conference (GDC), which is going on RIGHT NOW, had their own little schindig and handed out some awards, the list of which can be found over at 1-up: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3148975

Do you feel these awards were appropriately dealt out?

What role do you feel such a conference should play in honoring titles?

If you look at the list, Shadow of the Colossus, Guitar Hero, and Psychonauts make various appearances, here in one category, there in the other. Something seems dubiously strange with the way a modicum of games are picked and then stuck to the most appropriate categories. The awards are admirable, attmidetldy, but there are so many gaming awards that struggle to become THE gaming awards that the result is lackluster at best.

It is as though on one hand we have absolute sensationalist nonsense (read: Spike Videogame Awards Show) and then these GDC honors that seem custom tailored to avoid any high-profile titles (which is nice for those underrated artistic efforts, but sits on almost the opposite side of the spectrum).

Thoughts?

Some of the high profile titles were nominated for some awards, God of War and Resident Evil 4 included, but I guess they must have REALLY liked Shadow of the Colossus. Also you have to consider this is the game developers' conference, not some random exhibition, which has the purpose to bring out new technology and improve development of games and game design. The judges must have felt that the design of Shadow of the Colossus was much better than the higher profile titles, thus why it swept the awards. I believe from the eyes of a game designer, no other game would have felt as well done as the four games that took out the awards.

Anyway, Psychonauts winning best writing and Double Fine winning best new studio? Hell yeah! :)
