Phew, okay, I gotta wait for a shitload of stuff to load at work (probably gonna take a half hour or so) so I got some extra time for a meaty post.
So about the Wii. The remote itself is very accurate, very light and very comfortable. I myself played Super Mario Galaxy, Tennis, Baseball and Ping Pong. The line for Zelda was waay too long and it was kinda suffocating in there anyways.
One very interesting thing is how much that remote "knows" your doing things. For instance, when playing baseball I was holding the remote like a bat (you can see my friends playing in the pics) and it will detect how your wrist moves because the player will mimic your hand motions perfectly. One of my friends even pointed the remote to the sky (bluffing for a homerun) and the player did the same thing, awesome! For the Ping Pong game things were much more subtle, no swinging necessary just move your paddle to the prioper spot in time and youre good. The result? I sucked! I actually thought the game sucked too because of my ineptitude but then my girfriend played it and she kicked ass! It comes to show that this is so new that it takes different games and gives them different approaches depending on the genre, Its not all swinging your arm like an idiot.
Mario Galaxy is pretty much perfect. You move with the nunchuk (which has two buttons, one of them is for ducking) and on the remote you have your button for jumping and another one top drag things with the remote. For instance, the rmeote leaves a small trail on the screen, so if you aim it to Mario and spin it, he will do a spinning move. If I aim it at a goomba and click, the goomba will be dazed so that I can jump on him easier. Things like that with top notch Mario gameplay = win.
Is Sony trying top cash in on Nintendos idea? That is certain. I know for a fact (since the team that makes Warhawk is Utah based and I know some people in there) that Sony just "implemented" that feature less than a month ago and that they implemented it in Warhawk two weeks ago. That add-on is clearly an afterthought after they realized that Nintendo was on to something and hey, I wouldnt bitch so much if it played well ... but having played both I can tell you that the Sony product is a sad imitation. Add the facts that Sony made the R2 and L2 buttons act like triggers now (like the 360 and GC controllers) and also added a Playstation logo-button in the middle of the remote (like the X-Box) and you would have to be naive to believe Sony isnt playing the "me too" game.
But, the question is, is the technology behind the Wii innovative? Actually no, the first try was made by Microsoft of all people, heres an excerpt:
"
The second technology that brings it all together is the use of motion sensors, iMEMSĀ® solid state accelerometers (not gyros) that detect motion by way of acceleration which were provided by Analog Devices, Inc.. After much prying around at E3, I was told that there are three accelerometers at work in the Wiimote. There are also at least two accelerometers used in the nunchuck add-on to detect motion in it as well. This technology is by no means new either, it was used in a product in 2001 that XGaming used to sell called the Cyberstik (or VRJoy), and back in 2000 Microsoft had a big failure of a product with the same tech called the Sidewinder Freestyle Pro. Accelerometers are quite inexpensive at around only around fifty cents each, so there is no reason that Wiimotes should cost any more than any other gamepad on the console front.
"
Obviously the difference is that Nintendo believes this is the next step in software, while Microsoft and Sony dont want to take any chances and will wait and see what happens (just like you can bet your ass the PSP2 will have touch screen functionality)
The problem with the PS3 so far is that not only have they failed to capture development teams interest by making it the hardest console to program for but that the price is the highest and the consumer now sees little difference between what a PS3 and a 360 have to offer. It will have great games eventually and I will buy it, of course, but I can think of plenty of reasons by some guy WOULDNT get it. On the other hand, most people see what the Wii has to offer and they are at least charmed by the possibilities. And lets not even talk about the lack of rumble on the PS3 controller (eventhough the Wii and the 360 have it) or all the features youll be missing out on if you dont get the 600 dollar version. I can honestly tell you from being at the show that Sony failed to incite people to play their stuff. Some games looked awesome, true but you knew where peoples interest lay on the most: Wii and 360 software, and the lines of people waiting to play proved that.
Another thing is how much awesome momentum the DS has right now: Zelda, New Super Mario Bros, Yoshis Island 2, Starfox, Beat Agents ... etc, very impressive lineup
Anyways, on to regular E3 stuff I saw:
We got in the Spore demo video that Will Wright himself did, my girl explained it much better on her lj:
"
We waited over an hour to see it, though they kept filling the damn room up with VIPs... then I thought I recognized a voice, I thought I'd heard Will Wright. There was a man standing with his back to me in the doorway of the room, with a really old-fashioned haircut.. I was like... "no way... can't be him..." I didn't think too much else of it. We entered, and upon seeing that the VIPs had taken all the seats Xavier started bitching about how they got let in early AND they took all the damn seats--and sure enough, Will Wright hears him and tells us that there is plenty of room up front, and we were more than welcome to sit there instead of being stuck in the back.
OMG.
OMG.
1000x better than chairs.
So Xavi, Victor and I sat down indian-style like, two feet away from Will Wright. He and Xavi had a brief conversation, I was too nervous and in awe to say anything. The Spore demo was fucking awesome, but dude, I seriously just expected a video, not the creator of all that I love giving a presentation to us about it. o.o;;;; I really wanted to go up to him after the presentation was over, to thank him for his games and the influence he's given me, but I chickened out because I was scared I'd fangirl and make myself look stupid. D: OMG OMG. FREAKOUT. Maybe someday I will get to meet him again and not be a fangirl, lol.
"
What she said.
Also, we got in the Square Enix demo theater to see all the Final Fantasy XIII stuff on the movie sized screen. It was all pretty mindblowing and also I got to play all their new current gen games that are coming out. Dirge of Cerberus looks "eh" but Ill probably get it for the cinematics (haha, thats MY job). Final Fatnasy III for the DS looked badass, the Valkyrie Profile PSP is a perfect port from the original from what I played and the sequel is looking pretty tight too. Seems that when you enter a fight you are in 3D space, free to move around and when you get to the enemy it switches to the traditional Valkyrie Profile side view. Crisis Core footage seemed prety awesome, FF X quality graphics Id say and thats probably the FFVII memorial game that Im looking forward to the most.
Oh, and FF XII makes me wet
Also, on the first day we had a brush in with Shigeru Miyamoto ... I think, heres how Victor (one of our traveling buddies), reported it:
"
That night, the five of us were walking through West Hollywood near our hotel. We were some distance away from the Staples Center - certainly outside of the "reach" of the E3 party scene. As we walked, we came across a small stand which held a Plasma screen displaying the Sony logo. I held a projector on top which played trailers (I believe) of Sony games. A girl was standing next to the stand - probably to guard it from vandalism. We stopped to talk to her for a bit. Aaron took the lead and glibly entertained her with conversation. He and I faced our three companions, all of whom stood patiently as Aaron talked to the girl. Down the sidewalk, I saw three shorter Japanese people approaching us. They reached the corner and stopped, as if deciding whether to cross the street or turn the corner. One of them looked familiar. I looked for about two seconds, and realized that it was Miyamoto himself. It couldn't be - we were too far away from E3, and although we were on Hollywood Blvd which is somewhat of a tourist attraction, I couldn't imagine the Game God being out here. "Is it really him?" I asked myself. I looked at Aaron, who hadn't noticed him yet. Then he turned his head, and for once, the smoothest talker I've ever met couldn't find his words. He looked at Miyamoto in silence, then turned to me, giving me a smile indicating that my suspicion was correct. Aaron and I both stood there motionless. Our companions and the girl with whom Aaron had previously been talking to were all probably confused. In fact, they had indicated later that they thought we had seen something dangerous like someone pointing a gun at us.
Miyamoto and his two companions made up their mind after about 10 seconds of standing on the corner and walked up the street. Aaron slapped me on the chest. My knees gave away and I slid down the pole that I had been leaning on. We finally told the others what had just happened, and I believe that they are still angry to this day that we weren't able to at least inform them of who stood no more than five feet behind them.
Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures to verify that my story is true - just Xavier's rendition of my and Aaron's reaction scribbled on the back of a receipt later at dinner:
"
Yeah, fucked up and I didnt get to see shit ... Im still mad about that.
