Forums / The top 7...series run into the ground

So recently Games Radar released a list named by the subject of this thread, found here: http://www.gamesradar.com/us/psp/game/news/article.jsp?articleId=20070123142252250050

So, in an effort to generate actual discourse that doesn't end in two posts with Rahul's rude reply, what are your feelings regarding these franchises, are you pleased/saddened to see them go the way they have, and do you think they should've been around this long in the first place?

Many of these series simply fail to reiterate their winning formula, and in attempting a new angle fail miserably. Number Six, Megaman, strikes a chord with me because it has to be the only series on that list that sticks so cohesively to its formula but seems to have gone under anyway. That is, Rockman has stagnated so much that there is little incentive in picking him up again save for nostalgic motivations. Nevertheless, I found Mega Man X: Command Mission to be a great deal of fun, which essentially means to me that crossing over into other genres is a good way to keep the vitality of a series going.

Focusing on that idea a little more, creating a title in the same genre as its predecessor allows you to compare it directly. But turning Madden into a first person shooter would be so mind-bogglingly different that you simply couldn't say whether it was better than Madden '05/'06'/'07/'0-fucking million simply because of the staggering genre differences.

Thoughts?

except Spy Hunter and Viewtiful Joe, thats pretty spot on I think

I think you could chalk up the Mana series on that list. The last one I even considered playing was Legend of Mana, and I wasn't too impressed. No iteration since then has seemed worthy of being picked up. We're talking the same series that included Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 here.

Yeah, pretty accurate, wouldn't have put Spy Hunter on there, or Viewtiful Joe, Neither series nearly long enough to be considered run into the ground, especially in comparison to everything else on the list. (Spy Hunter was pretty shit though)

I'd put Mega Man higher up on that list, since Capcom whored it so hard there's no credibility left to the series.

Other things that should have been added? Gauntlet.

Why isn't Madden on there? They've released the same fucking game for how many years now?

To add a few that have popped up in my view recently:

-WW2 games in general
-Tony Hawk (game every 2 years minimum plz)
-Tales of... games. They could all probably use an extra year of development

Yeah, I think once you call a game "Tales of Legendia", that is to say "Tales of Tales"...that's probably about it.

I love Legends. I actually have been thinking of playing through it again, for the fourth or so time.

Regarding Megaman..it's a bit like the Sims and all of the expansion packs. It's the same shit, over and over again. You can only repackage it so many times before it gets dull. I love a good Megaman every once in awhile, but it's like having Cheetos for lunch (the puffs, not that crispy shit that I don't know -how- became the industry standard) - insubstantial and barely satisfying. And I'd be hard pressed to feel like buying a new one..I liked MX4's story and all, but they took it to the realm of anime kitsch in which it's hard to really give a shit for the overall continuity.

MMX had a great overarching storyline up to MMX5, at which point it should have ended. Sort of like Buffy!

If you play a Legends game, play Legends 2. It's as close to Megaman meets Zelda as you'll ever get.
