- E3 2007 - Square Enix to bring online store stateside
In addition to its E3 lineup announcement, Square Enix has revealed its scheme to open a North American online store. Square Enix, as a self-described "premiere [maker] of high end-collectibles" plans to stock a multitude of "popular and hard-to-find items" including Master Arms, Play Arts, and Mechanical Arts spanning various series, from Final Fantasy to Kingdom Hearts. Clearly, Square Enix has seen that someone, somewhere is making money selling its products. The immediate consequence will likely find many third-party vendors competing for profits with Square Enix itself. The Online Store
- Tanaka: "We were making Final Fantasy III for PS2 until Nintendo convinced us otherwise"
In an interview with Hiromichi Tanaka today on CVG, the producer reveals that Final Fantasy III (DS) was originally a PS2 project, but Nintendo convinced Square Enix to move it to DS instead. Other interesting tidbits: a Final Fantasy VII remake on DS is "a matter of timing", and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (Wii) will take advantage of motion detection for spellcasting. - Madness continues: Final Fantasy III DS on the way
Clearly not content with one demonic pact, Square Enix has joined forces with Nintendo to create a "Final Fantasy III Crystal Edition" bundle featuring a very special Nintendo DS Lite decorated with Final Fantasy III character artwork. However, this special edition DS is releasing in limited units, and only in Japan, so order yours today for a mere 22,780 yen ($198 USD). Or you will die. - Final Fantasy III DS "e-mail" feature revealed
Long rumored to take advantage of the WiFi capabilities of the DS, Final Fantasy III is now set to include an "e-mail" feature. "Players will be able to send letters to their friends who also own copies of the game, and they'll be able to reply back. - Tanaka discusses Final Fantasy III
In a recent issue, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu interviewed the executive producer of the Nintendo DS remake of Final Fantasy III, Hiromichi Tanaka. Tanaka, who had been on staff for the original title, said that he wished for the upcoming remake to have the novelty of the original NES classic. To achieve this end, FFIII will receive an overhaul, which will include a graphical move into the third dimension, attribution of actual personalities to the previously faceless main characters, as well as tweaking of the gameplay to allow for better usability of certain classes. In addition, Tanaka will make use of the DS itself by allowing the entire title to be played with the touch screen and include the DS's wireless connectivity for certain side bonuses. Final Fantasy III does not yet have a Japanese or North American release date, but by all indications Square Enix intends to put the title through to launch.

Nintendo's WiFi press conference in Japan today revealed some interesting developments for the DS online service, but the funkiest of them all (and this news article isn't even THE funkiest, see below) included announcements that, yes, indeed, Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI are in fact going to appear on Game Boy Advance at some point in the TBA future. Rejoice! Also, gaming news website Gpara reports that Final Fantasy III DS is alive and well and fully polygonal.
