Dragon Quest: Young Yangus and the Mysterious Dungeon preview

Yangus, the protagonist.: A 12 year old boy who would become the shifty-eyed ex-thief from Dragon Quest VIII.
Gerda, the bandit matriarch known as Red in the English language release of Dragon Quest VIII.: As mentioned in DQVIII, she and Yangus had history that is more deeply explored here.
Poppy, a young kid who helps Yangus in his adventure.: Poppy takes care of captured monsters and is local to Pottal Land, the world where the story is developed.
Morrie, the monster master from Dragon Quest VIII.: He introduces Yangus to monster breeding.
Torneko, the merchant from Dragon Quest IV.: He trains Yangus at the beginning of the game, later opening a shop in Pottal Land.
Yanpa, Yangus' father and leader of a group of brigands.: He owns the magic pot that is home to the world of Pottal Land.
