Final Fantasy XI, tentatively slated for a 2001 Playstation 2 release in Japan, will support up to 3,000 players simultaneously on each of its PlayOnline servers, acccording to reports in the Japanese press.
Square also has plans to develop FF-related software for cell phones and other wireless devices with the help of telecommunications partners. These mini-games could have linking functionality with FFXI, somewhat similar to Chocobo World on Sony's Pocketstation and Final Fantasy VIII.
