Former industry rivals decide to hop into bed with each other for the money. In other irrelevant news, flying pigs were sighted somewhere and spurious comments about RPG crossovers were made.
Alluding to the financial and logistical difficulties that companies face as part of an increasingly competitive gaming industry, Enix announced today that it has commenced plans to merge with former industry rival Square.

The merger, which both companies expect to complete by April 1 of next year, will form a new company called "Square Enix" that consolidates the resources of Japan's most prominent RPG developers, the creators of Japan's most famous role-playing game series, Final Fantasy (Square) and Dragon Quest (Enix).

The conditions of the merger stipulate that Square will be dissolved and that Enix will absorb Square's assets and liabilities.  Shareholders will receive 0.81 shares of Enix stock in exchange for each Square stock.  However, the current president of Square, Yoichi Wada, will head the new company.

Both companies expect that after the merger is completed, Square Enix will produce 80 billion yen ($656 million USD) in sales and 15 billion yen ($123 million USD) in profit by fiscal year 2005.

"In the ever-changing world of entertainment software, the most important issue facing companies today is how quickly they can grow as the marketplace and opportunities for business expand and diversify," Enix said in a financial statement released today. "Enix and Square's response to this issue is the merger announced today... Together, we will aim to become producer of the highest-quality digital contents in the world."

First reaction: Holy fucking shit!

Second reaction: Whoa.

Third reaction: Wow.

I'm hard at work on more eloquent comments.

either this is majorly cool news.. or you're playing a trick on us.. which i think is possible, since you said that it's expected to be completed by "April 1 of next year".. are you playing an early April fools trick on us? :P
pixel
It's bullshit. It's probably just some ploy to see how gullible other fan sites will be.

Nice try, though.
pixel
Or maybe not... gross.
staff
pixel
oh, please. Give us a break here. We are certainly above pulling that Final Fantasy Online mind-game superiority bullshit.

I didn't include a direct link to the source because I forgot to copy the link. Sorry about that.

And thanks for changing the title... I was really out of it.

Of course guys, because April Fool's Day is WORLDWIDE tradition, celebrated by all and it makes sense to mention the story in November because then you look cool. (sarcasm mode off)

Blah, it's not a joke:
"April Fool's Day is not common in Japan yet because of The Day that New Fiscal Year starts in common"

More importantly, Matt...You're fucking dissing FFONLINE???? How dare you? No wonder you're not an affilite of that orgasmic site. They got into magazines for their April Fools jokes, which means they're cool and they fooled the RPG community. Matt, you only wish you can be a full grown man like the old FFONLINE webmaster and spend time using Photoshop to make fake FF packaging.

FFONLINE forever, Matt...Spend thousands of dollars and countless hours of hard work on your own project like [they] did. (VERY COOL QUOTE from http://www.ffonline.com/site/admin.htm)

Oh, I only wish I could have my dick stroked slavishly like those guys at FFO. So envious.

And no, I'm not going to put any smilies in to defuse any possible tension.

He was being sarcastic, I think...

If it seems so, I'm not dissing FFOnline. They do their thing and I do mine. I have nothing against them. I'm just not above pointing out that I'm not above mentioning the stupid shit they pull out of their asses on occasion.
staff
pixel
On occasion?

Ha! I am a hater.
staff
pixel
Don't hate! Congratulate!
pixel
I wonder what's gonna hapen to FF......

And DW...

And....

Doctor Doom. Har har har.

As for FF and DW (DQ, whatever), I doubt anything'll change. They merged to make more money, not to scare everyone away by changing everything.

And if anyone finds any differences or whatever in FFXII, it won't be because of Square Enix. The game has a different director that the rest of the series, but that was announced by Square months ago.

You guys worry about the merger? I say one thing.. remember Chrono Trigger? The Dream Team? It was a joint effort by Enix and Square and now what many RPG gamers have declared Square's best (SNES) RPG to date.

Now think Chrono Break.

Well, the only problem with that assumption is that Yuji Hori and the rest of the Heartbeat team members are on sabbatical right now and will assumably begin work on Dragon Warrior VIII once they resume work. Judging by the time it took them to complete Dragon Warrior VII, a possible Square/Enix collaboration is not anywhere in the near future.

is this merger goog or bad ???? whats going to happen to the finlal fantasy games
staff
pixel
Final Fantasy is dead.
staff
pixel
yeah, apparently Final Fantasy X-2 will be the last Final Fantasy ever as a result of the merger.
pixel
NO! This cant be.NO!
staff
pixel
I heard that they're going to unsell their previous games so you'll have to return them without getting your money back!!

I guess I had a lot of fun though. Bye, Final Fantasy :(
pixel
Square-Enix-Haven.com ?

Bye FF.

It has to end sometime.
pixel
It probably won't end now or anytime soon though... Hopefully. Notice how whenever FF switches to a different platform the game is really good Final Fantasy IV switching to SNES, Final Fantasy VII switching to PSX and FFX to PS2
pixel
i'll miss it a lot
