Final Fantasy XII sequel, three additional titles announced The news hit hard today with the most recent issues of Japanese gaming magazines VJump and Famitsu: Square Enix has unveiled no fewer than four titles currently under development for the Nintendo DS and Playstation 2. Friends of Mana is still alive and kicking, apparently Oh yeah, so after that out-of-nowhere Heroes of Mana unveiling the other day alongside those other titles, we didn't see or hear anything about Friends of Mana, a previously filed-for trademark. So most people just assumed Friends had been renamed to Heroes. Not so! Friends of Mana today was revealed to be a mobile instalment of the Mana series, confirming our worst fears that despite Square Enix's insistency to fail at producing anything compelling in a crossplatform fashion, Polymorphism™ appears to continue to lead their strategic approach. Too bad. Oh yeah, Friends is apparently an RPG with the same visual style as Children of Mana and uses turn-based combat. More news at 11. Link
Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings info surfaces This being the week of Tokyo Games Show, you can expect a bit more information on upcoming Square Enix titles, starting here with Famitsu's coverage of Revenant Wings, the DS "sequel" that apparently isn't a sequel and merely takes place in the same universe with the same characters, irrespective of any relationship to the original Final Fantasy XII. The game will explore further the relationship between Vaan and Penelo in a way that wasn't possible in its precursor as well as documenting their adventures as Air Pirates. Terrific.
Infidelity! Recreancy! Square Enix expresses ambivalence toward PS3 While Square Enix has already ruled out console monogamy, it remained evident that the PlayStation 3 would be the preeminent platform of choice for the most coveted of titles (read: Final Fantasy XIII). However, ambivalence is increasingly expressed toward the PS3 as a viable platform. The latest comment from Michihiro Sasaki, senior VP of Square Enix, only adds fuel to Square Enix's polymorphic fire: "We don't want PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them... But we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much." It makes perfect sense! 1UP
