The 2007 Game Developers Conference starts tomorrow with a keynote speech by Square Enix chief strategist Ichiro Otobe. Also scheduled to present at the conference is Final Fantasy series programmer Taku Murata, giving a postmortem of Final Fantasy XII, along with localization director Richard Mark Honeywood, talking on the videogame translation process. Square Haven will be in San Francisco wearing flowers in our hair to bring you the latest news from the event.

This year's Game Developers Conference will be taking place March 5 - 9 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Square Haven will be on hand at the event to bring you the latest news from the show floor. Here are some things you can expect to see covered in the following days.

Square Enix prolific creators

Square Haven will be attending the three lectures presented by Square Enix luminaries Ichiro Otobe, Taku Murata, and Richard Mark Honeywood. These sessions promise to shed light on the development process behind the Final Fantasy series' game design, covering all aspects of production from programming, to marketing, to English-language localization. If behind-the-scenes details are your cup of tea, be sure to check out our conference coverage.

Newfangled virtual reality technology

A bevy of hardware designers will be displaying their latest gadgets at this year's conference. Technologies scheduled for demonstrations include NaturalPoint's motion tracking technology, Vivox's voice recognition systems, Emyotic's in-ear high-fidelity headphones, Icuity's VR eyewear, and TN Games' "ForceWear" force-feedback vest. Together these products should offer readers a good idea of how immersive virtual environments will be simulated in the not-so-distant future.

Serious Games

Finally, Square Haven will be covering Square Enix's entry into the "serious games" market. The Serious Games Initiative is focused on uses for games in exploring management and leadership challenges facing the public sector. Part of its overall goal is to help link the electronic game industry with projects in education, health, and public policy. Ichiro Otobe will be delving into the subject at the event. Be sure to check back with Square Haven for coverage of Square Enix games at the 2007 Game Developers Conference.

Here are some pictures from the Moscone Center in San Francisco where we picked up our press badges. Hundreds of gift bags had to be arranged for the conference.
