At this year's Famitsu Awards, Hironobu Sakaguchi was distinguished as the Most Valuable Person, Nintendo won big with Pocket Monster, Mario netted the honor of character of the year, and Square's long-time RPG mainstay Akitoshi Kawazu accepted the award for best game. All in all, last year's big winner (in Famitsu's judgment, anyway) is old school gaming.

Scroll down the list of winners of 2006's Famitsu Awards and a pattern becomes apparent. In the opinion of Japan's most prestigious gaming magazine, old school was a force to be reckoned with last year: Mario won the award of best game character, Nintendo was awarded best game company, and New Super Mario Bros. got the Remix Award. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the evening was the award for best RPG going not to the sixth game ever to receive a perfect Famitsu score, but to Persona 3. Here is the list of this year's recipients:

Game of the Year
Final Fantasy XII
Pokemon: Diamond and Pearl

Hironobu Sakaguchi

Former executive producer of the Final Fantasy series, Hironobu Sakaguchi, received the Most Valuable Person award, having contributed to the creation of Mistwalker. The development house's debut game, Blue Dragon, took away the rookie award.

The honors for best game of the year were shared by Pokemon Diamond & Pearl and Final Fantasy XII. Accepting the award on behalf of Square-Enix was executive producer Akitoshi Kawazu, who was also present at the American and British launch of the game. Kawazu has been a mainstay of the company's RPG series since contributing to the game design and scenario of the original Final Fantasy twenty years ago. Ivalice pathfinder Yasumi Matsuno was not invited to the event. He was last seen climbing the Hamalayas with Valuable Person Hironobu Sakaguchi.

I can only assume Japan and possibly the U.S still loves Pokemon, I don't think many at all care about it here in Australia anymore.

Go Okami!

A world without Pokemon is a world of depravity. Australia must totally suck.

Well when I say anyone, I mean anyone I see, there are still stands full of 'coming soon' boxes for the latest DS title so I'm sure it's still selling...to someone.
