- Final Fantasy XIII exclusivity confusion, Dragon Quest IX certainty
Hirokazu Hamamura, overlord of Famitsu, spoke this week to a convocation of Tokyo journalists regarding his thoughts on token items such as Final Fantasy XIII, Dragon Quest IX, and a bright future for the Nintendo Wii. Bathe in the optimism
- Square Enix delays Dragon Quest IX; quality issues cited
Square Enix announced today that the release of the anticipated Dragon Quest IX would be shifted to 2008 in Japan from a previous listing of late 2007. The reason? Apparently, quality improvements are the cause of Level 5's development delay. While this news is no doubt unfortunate for fans of the series, it also means that Square Enix is willing to sacrifice time for a quality product. If such a behavior pays off in sales and eventually becomes policy, it could mean a new vitality amidst some lately-mediocre titles.
- E3 2007 - Square Enix blames stagnation on gamers
Dragon Quest IX, as you may or may not know, began as an Action RPG. After twenty years of traditional (classic?) grinding, Square Enix was ready to follow the rest of the RPG genre in moving away from traditional combat systems into new, innovative avenues. What happened? You did, apparently. As a Square Enix spokesperson said at E3, "People didn't want the change. When you've sold over 40 million copies, you've got to listen to your fans." Apparently the same syndrome that affects children when they purchase movie-based games and perpetuate the creation of terrible licensed titles has also infected the RPG market. Can there be any hope for change, especially within a flagship series such as Dragon Quest? Kotaku
- Japan isn't so happy about Dragon Quest IX
A survey of Famitsu readers in this week's issue asks the readers "Do you welcome Dragon Quest IX on Nintendo DS?" -- apparently 46% weren't particularly impressed. Nor were they intrigued by the notion that there's a world of gameplay beyond 1986's turn-based random encounters: 53.9% found the idea to be ludicrous. In fact, it's so bad that when asked what would be hot in 2007, retailers listed Wii above Dragon Quest IX. Holy crap! The world is turned upside-down! Insertcredit
- Dragon Quest gets festive
Touted as "The Bodily Sensation RPG," Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors for the Nintendo Wii allows players to destroy adorable slime monsters by swinging the Wiimote like a sword. Dragon Quest IX + Swords trailers
- Dragon Quest IX announced for DS
Today, a Tokyo press conference played host to the announcement of the next installment in Square Enix's flagship Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest IX: Defender of the Stars, for the Nintendo DS. The title will be developed by Level 5, which was responsible for the highly acclaimed Dragon Quest VIII. With a Wi-Fi component, players will be able to join with others in a similar style to Crystal Chronicles in what series creator Yuuji Horii calls more action-oriented battles. Composer Kouichi Sugiyama also made an appearance and declared that he would compose for Dragon Quest until the day of his untimely demise. A grave decision. Famitsu
