- Unlimited SaGa set for US release
Man, the headline says it all.. what kind of press release is this, anyway? Square has set the niche title for a "summer 2003" release. Unlimited Saga is basically unique because it has completely kickass music as well as sophisticated graphics technology that Square developed in cooperation with Adobe. - FF: THE BLACK MAGES released, live performance announced
Uematsu's official BLACK MAGES homepage now sports an update as the album was released in Japan today: Uematsu will be performing (personally? hahaha) the album live on April 26th in Shibuya, wherever that is. Interested parties may reserve tickets from March 1st. Babelfish also reports that this whole thing will involve a "thanking/apologizing meat festival" and will be performed by the "Black Demon Taoists". Right. PlayOnline

After 5 years of cooperation in releasing each other's titles with the purpose of increasing popularity in Japan (EA) and North America (Square), Square and EA will be terminating their publishing contract conveniently just before Square Enix comes into existence on April 1. Famitsu Cube/Advance rated Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, giving it 9/9/9/8 (35). That's two points higher than Famitsu gave it! Partial bastards! Unsurprisingly, FFTA has sold over 225k units so far... In related news, the same Cube/GBA mag also rated Metroid Prime and Fusion, dealing out respectively a 37 and 35. Not bad. A revealing scan of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles' ingame action has been revealed in some random Japanese magazine where this guy with purple hair and some sort of furry outfit poses as Kuja. - Square testing FFXI for North America
According to Gamespot, Square is currently holding beta testing for a possible North American release of Final Fantasy XI. No word was given on Sony's decision to release the PS2 harddrive stateside, however. Link

- Square Enix to focus on PlayOnline?
At a shareholder's meeting today, Yoichi Wada indicated that Square Enix would be focusing on the role of the player community as an important aspect of gaming and that they plan to develop titles akin to Final Fantasy XI for release in 2005. There was no information given as to what platform(s) these games would be launched for, but speculation suggests the next generation of online-oriented consoles like PS3 and Xbox Next might be the targets. Square EA has set the release date for the Final Fantasy I-II PSOne remakes, known as Final Fantasy Origins in NA and Europe, for 8th April 2003. - Famitsu rates Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and other miscellanea
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance received a 34/40 (8, 8, 9, 9) rating in the February 1 issue of Famitsu. (For comparison, the original Final Fantasy Tactics received a 33/40.) It is rumored that the February 7 issue of Famitsu will contain an interview with Yasumi Matsuno and Shigeru Miyamoto in which Matsuno "suggests" that Nintendo is collaborating with Square on Final Fantasy XII and Miyamoto laughs and Matsuno acts coy. In December, Matsuno "suggested" in a Dorimaga interview that gameplay elements in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance would also be used in FFXII. NewTechnix

The Magic Box says: "DigiCube has begun to accept reservations for Square's Final Fantasy X-2 for PlayStation 2. Those who pre-order the game will receive a specially made Yuna Mobile Phone Strap. Final Fantasy X-2 is scheduled to release in Japan on March 13, for 7800 yen." Media

- Square/Enix merger back on track
The dispute between Masafumi Miyamoto, Square's top shareholder, and Enix chairman Yasuhiro Fukushima has been resolved, putting the merger back on track for the start of the new fiscal year. The board members from both companies agreed to raise the share swap ratio to 0.85 (up from 0.81) Enix shares for every 1 Square share. In other words, the Enix side gave the Square side more money. Though still unhappy with the deal, Miyamoto accepted the compromise. Full Article
