Forums / The Best Games Of All Time

I was 8 or 9 when I first played Secret of Mana. It stayed my favorite RPG of all time until I played Xenogears 4-5 years later.

You know what? My 'best games'* list would be as follows...

GREAT GAMES THAT I HAVE PLAYED (and still own):

Super Mario Bros -this game formed my introduction to gaming, and solidified my place as a Nintendo fanboy...

Super Mario Bros 3 -Tanooki Suit... that's all I'm gonna say.

Legend of Zelda - The game that started it all, how many times have I started playing this game over again? It's still in my NES collection, I've played it when it was hidden in the NGC version of "Animal Crossing", and Nintendo'd even released it in the GBA a while back...

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past -This game still plays well, and I even went and played through it again a few years ago with "Four Sword Adventures"... Still enjoyed every minute of it!

Super Mario RPG -I'll admit that I recently purchased this game, and played through it... This game is still a great gem from Square & Nintendo... I hope that they eventually make a sequel off THIS Mario RPG in the future...

Final Fantasy (or any of the re-releases)

Final Fantasy VI (or "3" as we call it here on the SNES. This game was my first real introduction to Final Fantasy... I had played the original before, but actually got to play THROUGH this one)

Starcraft & Warcraft 2 -Two great games that still get play time these days... Who couldn't resist these two games at some point?)

Animal Crossing (I still pick up and play my copy on the DS , as it's a fun little game)

and of course:

Chocobo's Dungeon 2...
Chocobo Racing... Just because these two're so damned cute and fun to play...

Otherwise, I play a bit of Worms Armageddon on the PC (since it's the only one that's still seeing regular updates), Guild Wars (hey, it's a free-to-play-online RPG... and it's fun too!), and a little bit of Half-life (and mods, esp. Counter-Strike... although I regularly get my ass handed to me in gameplay)...

Now, this {*) meant that this list is off the top of my head in about 5 minutes, and as such, isn't meant to be my "Top Games of all time" list, just a quick brainstorm of games that I've thoroughly enjoyed over the course of my gaming life...

I was 8 when I played Link to the Past, but that didn't stop me appreciating it and being able to regard it as one of the best ever designed games. So I don't think age is really relevant.

It is relevant though, LttP was "more of the same" as far as it being a sequel to Zelda 1, only it looked badass and had lots of content. This kid has been playing RPG's for fifteen years, hence since he was FOUR years old. That alone is bullshit, but even if I ignore that load of crap, playing FF VII at the age of nine does not make you able to appreciate the innovations that it brought to the genre. Much less playing Final Fantasy VI when you were 7.

Recently my little sisters just got into videogames (Pokemon, FF III DS, New Super Mario) and they're 10, 12 and 13 and its really hard for them to really get the whole story and gameplay elements. Sure they can play the game just like I was able to play Monkey Island when I was 9, but you do not grasp the experience properly until youre in your early teens at the earliest. If you still do though, congrats, you should be doing something else with your time since youre clearly gifted.

I played Legend of Zelda and the first TMNT game when I was 4 years old. I then played the Sequel to LoZ with my father, TMNT 2 and 3 with my next door neighbor. I played chess with my father on most nights in front of the TV. saved up my allowance to get SNES, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda: A link to the past, Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia. That leads up until i was 9 and bought an N64, Zelda: OoT, Star Fox 64, Goldeneye 007, Mario Party.
And then on the Playstation, I played Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy V and VI, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, Many other Square RPGs and at last, Xenogears.

And Thank you, i've chosen to join the US Military.

With such game knowledge at your disposal I will expect nothing less than full Magitek armor from the US military in 20 years. Otherwise, its all a waste, really

I agree with you on Link to the Past but Mario 64 was definately better than Mario Bros. 3. I don't know if you watched The Wizard a lot or something, but it isn't that fantastic. I remember when I played it after Mario 2/Doki Doki Panic, got past the first world, and just stopped playing. Long live Birdo.
