He's right, listen to the man. I have yet to dislike ANY Final Fantasy game, that said I haven't played a huge amount, but that will change in time.

You crazy man, play it again and surround yourself with its glory!

I love FFVII but I have to agree is isn't that good. I mean yes it is excellent, but I don't think it is worthy of all the hype it receives.

In fact I think a lot of games receive too much hype, like Fable for instance

Final Fantasy VII has recieved so much hype and praise because it was the first GLORIOUS FF game, it had large areas, a bunch of side quests, it had better graphics than it's predicessors (of the 16-bit era), and it basically LAUNCHED the PS1... (OK, so I can't remember it's acutal launch date compared to the PS1's, but hey, it's the reason I bought one...)

So, because it was basically the launch point of many a FFFanboy, it holds a place dear to their hearts (kind of like me and Zelda... they can't MAKE a bad game if they tried... (sans the 3D0 stuff, but I've never played them so :P )

And, even though I haven't played much of "Dress Up Final Fantasy", I did enjoy what I played... and I really like FFIX thank you... In fact, Terasa and I have a wall scroll of Eiko in our bedroom (which will eventually get transfered to a gaming room when we move out of our apartment and into a better one).

I definitely agree that overhype can glorify a game past what it offers, but that wasn't the case for FFVII at all. Seven offered such an experience as gamers never knew the likes of before. And as Methusalen said, it pretty much did launch the Playstation. I remember selling my Playstation to get a 64 (Why God? Why would I do that?) and the minute I played Final Fantasy 7, I immediately went out and bought another PS and played the entire game through in one sitting... because I forgot to buy a memory card. Seven lives at the hearts of so many gamers because of this, and because it was just a damn good game overall. I think a lot of people had their first RPG experience with this game (I know a lot of my friends did) and when your immersed into a world (and story) like seven for the first time, you get a lot of fond memories and a standard that’s hard to surpass. For me, the story is different. Chrono Trigger initiated what has now become my irresistible love to play RPGs (it pretty much became that the minute I played Chrono Trigger), and after I played VII, it established a brand new standard for graphics separate from the 16-Bit era... but my favorite RPG of all time is a tie between two Square-Enix titles: Xenogears and FFVIII. I probably lean more towards Xenogears, but VIII is definitely my favorite FF title of all time... but we'll see if XII changes that.

Well, you're not exactly in the majority, either...

Anyway, maybe I should respond to the question at hand. Was FFVII overrated? Well, I think it's pretty obvious (due to the copious sequels\spinoffs\dating shows\how-to books made around it) that its either worthy enough for people to blow tons of money on anything with its logo, or the people at Squenix know how to market. If you erase the graphical upgrades and the CG, is it as good as Final Fantasy VI, or Chrono Trigger? Probably not. However, those are pretty much the two greatest RPG's ever made. So, however overrated it may be, it's nowhere near a bad game.

Although if games like Final Fantasy continue their strength in presenting a wonderfully thought out storyline and their battles, each upgrade in graphics only serve to create a better game. Certainly immersion-wise anyway. The classics are classics, the newer titles if made correctly are also great. You cannot overrate a game that had so much going for it, especially if said game brings people into the world of Square, and their brilliant game creations.
pixel
It's most certainly a superb game. The way some people talk about it as though it is some sort of holy relic does make me think it's a little overrated though.
pixel
Who has the time? I like FF especially the graphics. I would prefer to watch someone else play.
pixel
omg god it is i've played final fantasy 7, 8 9 and 10 and 10 2 and chrono trigger
7 is the best or second best. i wasn't really a fan of chrono trigger never got into much myself.

Yeah, you need to learn proper grammatical construction or leave and never come back.

The ball is in your court.

Maturity would also help.

More than a bit.

Heh heh. ...YOUR CRAZY....

You gotta love peppiness, right?

Ah. Final Fantasy 7. It is overrated just a little. Though, a few people have already brought up the number one reason why. It launched Final Fantasy, woke people up to all that is Square, and had a killer storyline with tons of colorful characters.

Of course... most of the Final Fantasies do have those very things... but don't forget, launchpads are seen on a much more different scale than its successors.
This one set the bar-- and what a bar it is.

I remember buying an N64 for Star Fox.... then I saw the commercial for FF7 a month later, and nearly shit my pants. I never got to get in on the hype of PS1 when it was really booming-- so the answer to my problems?

Final Fantasy 7.... on the PC.

....yes, yes. You can say whatever the hell you want. But it was a quick solution, and I got to play the game with much more smoother graphics. Of course... my pc had all the problems in the world-- a shitty graphic AND sound card. I had to call tech support at least once a week, and I had to listen to the beautiful and compelling soundtrack through the glory that is MIDI.

Fortunately, it was all worth it.

To make a long story short... if I was willing to go through all that horrid crap just to play a game like FF7, considering that I normally wouldn't go through crap like that for a game, then perhaps it may very well be one of the most innovative and astounding games to have ever been made, and not just an overrated hype that people accuse it of being.

'nuff said.

its a very very good game, and it tears me up that i lent it to someone bigger and cooler than me when used to be friends, and now whenever i work up the courage to ask for it back he looks all big and scary. Its still overhyped though, but yeah its just because its dear to everyones hearts etc

Btw i didnt like FFIX

and i liked X-2 (not that much mind)

Star Fox on the 64 fucking owned the hell out of FFVII, I was still playing that long after I finished FFVII. Heck the majority of the ff series is overrated, but that's just my opinion.
