Introduction

The Seiken Densetsu series, which has succesfully melded quirky characters, gorgeous environments, and frenetic action into four titles, has been one joyful, extended guilty pleasure. But while recent series installments (Seiken Densetsu 3, Legend of Mana) prove that it is possible to tinker with the formula (albeit with mixed results in terms of gameplay), Secret of Mana possesses a pervasive simplicity at its core--unadorned gameplay complemented (not overshadowed) by a spare, yet delightful story--that is arguably its most endearing charm. It shows that the formula does not necessarily require any tweaking.
