Final Fantasy IX GuideBy Paul LeIntroductionWhile its appearance and tone hearken back to the Final Fantasy series' quasi-medieval roots, Final Fantasy IX is hardly an uninspired retread disguised by a veneer of nostalgia. Indeed, longtime fans will no doubt appreciate the innumerable references to previous installments - red mages, a four-armed wise guy, "rally-ho," and the like. For some, grandiose castles and indomitable heroes are symbols of what Final Fantasy used to be (and for some, what it ought to be). FFIX's true appeal, however, lies in its refreshing simplicity; spare, taut gameplay and a motley assortment of endearing characters are familiar attributes that pay homage to the past--if not necessarily future--spirit of Final Fantasy more than crystals and deus ex machina ever could.
