I'd rather they leave off the pathetic hypocritical "there is nothing wrong with being gay but I'M NOT GAY SO DON'T MISTAKE ME FOR ONE!!!!" it really defeats the purpose.

I always thought that stating you were not gay in such debates establishes that you have nothing to directly gain from gay rights. By saying, "I'm not gay, and I support gay marriage," means that by allowing gay marriage, you will not be gaining something you didn't already have, so your belief is pure. Also, the "I'm not gay" part is inserted because most gay people all indiscernible from the rest of the populace. This is not so with other issue such as race, gender, financial status, etc. where benefactors tend to be clear.
